Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Has anyone heard any treatment methods for lungs fibrosis caused by radiation?

Has anyone heard any treatment methods for lungs fibrosis caused by radiation?

My aunt has been diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago, after a year the illness spread to her lymph nodes. She received radiation at first and once the cancer spread to lymph nodes, she got an FDA approved medication/chemo (called Ixapebilone) in the past years, which now caused lung fibrosis.

She currently suffers from lung fibrosis and sadly can't get any chemo. She is tied to an oxygen mask 24/7. She can't get up from her bed, since every move leaves her breathless.

I will appreciate with any type of info and suggestions.

Thanks.  Ashley

Ashley, I'm so sorry that your aunt is having this side effect of her treatment. If your aunt has not seen a doctor at a Comprehensive Cancer Center, I'd recommend that she get a second opinion from a doctor at a big cancer center or research hospital. Doctors there will be up on the best treatments and can double check to make sure that the radiation is the problem and not breast cancer that has spread to her lungs or some other type of treatable lung problem. Thanks Phyllis for your response. Her most recent doctor told my family that it is most likely because of the radiation.

Unfortunately, my aunt lives in Turkey and she can’t travel at this point. Do you know of any such centers in Turkey? Or whether the ones over here would be OK with reviewing her medical records (translated in English already) without her being physically here?

My hope is, if I can find out about a remedy, I can ask the doctors in Turkey to apply it.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Ashley - Interestingly, one of America's top cancer hospitals, M.D. Anderson, has a partnership with a cancer center in Istanbul, providing radiation treatment. Perhaps having one of the doctors there review her situation would help? Here's the link to the cancer center in Istanbul . It's in Turkish - if you don't understand Turkish, you'll need a translation. Or get started with this link to M.D. Anderson's site, detailing their partnership. Best of luck to you both- PJH
