The reader above is right on - at her age, and given she's had the lump for 5 years, it's probably a fibroadenoma - a non-cancerous ("normal") lump. But for peace of mind, nothing beats hearing "You're just fine" right from the doctor himself - or herself, if possible. Good luck - PJH

It's useless to be worried and scared when you can go to a doctor and clear everything up. I hope you can encourage her to stop wasting her time stressing over this, and go find out what it is. It's probaby not cancer; but it needs to be ruled out. Please do what you can to get her to see a doctor, OK? Thanks- PJH

Hi - An ultrasound is a very easy procedure. They put some gel on your breast, and run a small, hand-held sensor over the area in question. It's not painful at all, but she'd obviously have to take her shirt and bra off. It might be easier for her to have a female technician, so please ask for one ahead of time.

As for cost - difficult to say without knowing where you are, or whether she has any insurance. Typically it might cost about $500, in the U.S. If you're in the U.S., and she doesn't have insurance, tell her to ask at the hospital about diagnostic servies for women who need financial help - there are government programs that could help with this. And if she needs a mammogram, there are programs for underserved women for that procedure, too. Good luck - PJH

Disclaimer: I have no medical background and I am not an expert on these matters. Just another woman who has recent spent a lot of time reading up on Breast Cancer

Given her age and the fact that the lump has been there for 5 years chances that it might be cancer are very low. However, if I were her, I would visit a doctor and get that checked out, if nothing else for my mental peace. I would say see a doc soon.

The initial shyness and awkwardness is perfectly normal ,I felt the same, may be  look for a lady doctor that take some of the awkwardness away..:).

All the best
