I had a modified radical mastectomy on my left side and a simple mastectomy on the right on 10-5-09. I am now scheduled for expanders. On a personal level, what can I expect? What has others experienced?

I have had the same as you, but flipped. My experience has been a bumpy one, and though I have had some issues through out, I believe mine has been an uncommon one. First off I had my mastectomies done seperately, so when I had the right side done and moved forward with reconstruction 3 months later, it failed due to a hematoma and dying tissue. The skin at the incision started turning black like a really bad bruise, and got bigger and bigger until the doctor had to take me into surgery to remove the expander. I had to wait a whole year before I was able to try again. By time I was ready for my 2nd attempt, I decided to have my other breast removed and do immediate reconstruction at the same time. I must have had bad luck because this time on the left breast, the skin started turning black at the incision. The doctor gave me this green ointment that ate away the skin and left me with a hole in my chest for 3 months. at one point you could see the expander itself, so my doctor popped it and pulled it out. He made me wait a few months then put a new one in. Once I had them both in, he found that my cancer returned in my right side so reconstruction was on hold while I went through radiation. When all was said and done, and my skin had healed suffiently we started pumping saline in weekly. It took about 6 weeks to fill them up, as I had the largest capacity expanders made and we overfilled to 1200 cc's, just to accomadate 850 cc's implants. In the process I broke 2 ribs and had severe back and underarm pain. On a weekly basis expect some mild pain and pressure until the skin stretches and adjusts to the additional saline. Take some Tylenol before each visit to help. Like I said, my experience was pretty uncommon. Not a lot of people experience failures, let a lone two. I also have had some issue with capsular contracture, which is a hardening of the cells forming along the implant. I've had it removed, and new CC has developed. I've alos had my implant shift out of place twice now. But what I've heard from others has all been good things. Like I said, my issues are uncommon and happen to about 1 in 10.
Good luck!

Hello, I had my double mastectomy in May 2008 with reconstruction. The tissue expanders were inserted at the same time as my mastectomies. They were injected with about 100 cc's of saline each week or so until they were the correct size for the implants. It is necessary to go slowly so the muscles and skin can expand slowly and grow. Mine took about 4 months to accomplish. They are uncomfortable but it is a necessary step to reach the ultimate goal of nice TATAs. I am happy, healthy cancer free and have great TATA's. hang in there !
