Thursday, May 28, 2009 jan asks

Q: I have had breast cancer at age 32 I am now 40 and have lumps in my neck, under arm and other breast

My mum has had breast cancer and recovered-15years ago.  I am now 41 but had breast cancer at 32.  I now have very small, hard lumps in my neck under my arm and in my 'good' breast.  I am very worried should I be?? I am very fit now and feel really well.  I have 3 other sisters and two brothers.  My sisters now have annual mammograms and they have all been clear these last two years.  Please send me some good news. Jan

Jan, the good news is that you are a nine-year survivor of breast cancer.  More good news:  the lumps you are feeling might very well be cysts or enlarged lymph nodes.  The only way to find out what they are is to go to the doctor and get checked out.  If these are cancer, the sooner you get started on treatment, the better.  This time around, you would be bringing all kinds of maturity, life experience, and wisdom in dealing with the medical system that you might have lacked at 32.  If it turns out that these lumps are something benign, the sooner you know, the sooner you can stop worrying.  As breast cancer survivors, we have a tendency to jump to the worst conclusion when something goes wrong in our bodies, but most of the time, the problem turns out to be something benign.

Thank you so much for replying so soon, I have an appointment for the cancer hospital next Friday but for now I feel a little less worried.  I will let you know the outcome if that is alright with you. Jan
