Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, September 17, 2009 worried asks

Q: I am worried that these bumbs in my breasts may be cancerous.

I am 19 years old. and I realize how rare it is for someone my age to have breast ccancer but when i feel my breasts they are hard-ish. Whould those be lumps or is it normalI have always had these lump-ish things in my breasts so i never really thought anything of it. I always thought they were normal and now I am wondering if they are or not. Cancer does run in my family. My dad died of colon cancer and it is heridtary  so i may be at a greater risk then others of numerous types of cancer.

Hi - First of all, cancer running in your family doesn't increase your risk of breast cancer, OK? (Unless your mom had it.) And lumps in the breast are very normal for young women. Please read our letter to teens, and our teen guide to breast development for lots of good information. I hope these two posts help set your mind at ease. Good luck - PJH
