Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, September 06, 2009 LadyC asks

Q: How likely is it that a tender knot, accompanied by stabbing pain above my right nipple is cancer?

Last night I noticed tenderness above my right nipple.  So I felt the area and can feel what seems like a knot.  It is above and to the left side (away from the arm pit).  It reminds me of the way glands would swell and be tender during nursing, but I am perimenopausal and maybe even be menopausal.  My last period was 8 months ago and 6 months before that, I have not taken birth control for 2 years now and do not take hormone treatment.  There is an occasional sudden sharp pain and the area is tender to the touch.  I do have a Dr's appointment this Wednesday, and will talk to her then, but this being a long holiday weekend, I cannot help be be worried right now.  BTW-in case it matters, I do have implants, I got them 8 years ago and have had not problems with them.  Thank You.

Hi - Could be the implants acting up; could be a painful cyst or fibroadenoma (overgrown breast tissue), or an infection of some kind. Generally speaking, a cancerous tumor wouldn't be painful or tender, where a cyst or infection would. But all of this is supposition - your doctor will tell you Wednesday what s/he suspects, and order the diagnostic tests you need. Good luck - PJH
