Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, July 25, 2009 chelev asks

Q: I have ER/PR+ (highly), HER2- Stage II, Grade II IDC.

Lumpectomy 2/09, clean margins. 0/4 lymph nodes. I had remaining ovary removed 1997, hyst. /1 ovary removed 1991.  I am not responding well to Femara and want to go the natural route.  Had chemo (TC - 2 rounds, problems with chemo tolerance too), 33 rounds radiation.  I am 46 years old.  I'm not sure where to go from here.  My oncologist and I decided after 2 weeks on Femara (half doses at that!), with the constant nausea and headaches, and hand swelling, excruitating bone pain and fatigue, to stop it and I am to consult with him next week.  I do not wish to continue on an AI, as I am not tolerant of many medicines and tend to get side effects from everything.  Would progesterone cream help?  Iodine?

Hi - If your cancer is progesterone-resonsive, you want to stay away from progesterone cream. I've never heard of using iodine to treat cancer. My one suggestion would be for you to try tamoxifen, which was the gold standard prior to AIs, and is still widely used. In my experience, its side effects are minimal. If you don't want to try tamoxifen, then I'd say you should simply eat a healthy, low-fat diet; avoid alcohol; exercise, and hope for the best. Good luck - PJH

Thank you for your response and information.  I will definitely have discussions with my oncologist to come up with the best solution.
