When can benign lumps turn cancerous?

I have had this cyst in my breast for years.   I recently had a needle biopsy and it shows that it's cancerous.  Is this common?  If so, I'm now worried about all of the other so called "cysts" that I have.

Sherrie, there's a lot of disagreement in the scientific research community about whether fibrocystic breast disease carries an increased risk of breast cancer (or if it does, how much); but it's not totally unusual that the doctor should suddenly find cancer, given your history. There's not a whole lot you can do other than "watchful waiting," which it sounds like you've been doing. I'm sure your doctor will explain your treatment — how you'll be getting extra mammograms, and regular checkups, from now on. PLEASE make sure (s)he takes the time to explain to you thoroughly everything you want to know. And stay connected here as you go through treatment — there are a lot of folks here ready to help. Best of luck- PJH
