Hi all -

I've been recently diagnosed and am seeing a general surgeon who spends about 80% of her time on breast surgery.  I have heard of surgical oncologists as well.  What does a surgical oncologist offer that a general surgeon and separate oncologist can't in terms of treatment?

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Sherrie - I'd go with the surgical oncologist if you could. It makes sense that a surgeon who specializes in cancer surgery would be more proficient at it, since (s)he deals only with cancer cases; and at least one study has shown that surgical oncologists get more successful results than general surgeons when it comes to dealing with cancer surgery. So, if it's at all possible... opt for the surgical oncologist. Good luck! - PJH
