Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Sherrie asks

Q: Surgical Oncologist

Hi all -

I've been recently diagnosed and am seeing a general surgeon who spends about 80% of her time on breast surgery.  I have heard of surgical oncologists as well.  What does a surgical oncologist offer that a general surgeon and separate oncologist can't in terms of treatment?

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Sherrie - I'd go with the surgical oncologist if you could. It makes sense that a surgeon who specializes in cancer surgery would be more proficient at it, since (s)he deals only with cancer cases; and at least one study has shown that surgical oncologists get more successful results than general surgeons when it comes to dealing with cancer surgery. So, if it's at all possible... opt for the surgical oncologist. Good luck! - PJH

Sherri,

I don't have an answer since it is now 2 years later but I am going through the same decision making dilema as you did.  Surgical oncologist (2 hours away) or general surgeon (with some specialization in breast lumpectomy close to home).

What worked for you?

Sherry, you might want to send a message directly to Sherri, by clicking on her name and going to her page - she might be more likely to see your question. Good luck - PJH
