Second Opinions

Topics:Breast Cancer Treatment

I've read a lot of posts (not from this site) where those diagnosed with breast cancer have gotten 2nd, sometimes 3rd and even 4th opinions.  I have been to one surgeon who really seems to be professionally competent and has a really great bedside manner as well.  I don't really feel like I need to get a second opinion at this point.  Does anyone think I would be remiss if I didn't?  I'm currently scheduled for a lumpectomy with a sentinel node biopsy on the 26th of this month.

Thanks to all of the experts.  You have been incredibly helpful to me to over these past few weeks since being diagnosed.

Sherrie, go with your gut feeling on this.  If it ain't broke don't fix it.  You need to have a great relationship with your doctor as you are going through a huge life change and challenge.  You need a dr that works with you to achieve what is best for you and not what is easiest for them.

I have found a few dr's i hit it off with from the start and others I knew the second I met them they weren't for me.

you're dr should talk with you and explain things in a manner you can understand (not all medical terms) and should take your feeling and desires into consideration.

I'm glad you found a dr that you feel is professional and just an overall good fit.

best of luck to you!

Angi

Sherrie, Angi's right. Don't let anyone around you badger you into alternate opinions. They hate the fact you have cancer, and are hoping for another doc to magically appear and say you don't. Ain't gonna happen. What your doctor has recommended sounds absolutely right. If you like him, go with him (or her). Trusting/lining your oncologist is HUGE, because you're going to be spending a lot of "quality time" with him/her over the next few years or so... good luck. Glad you're finding this site helpful. -PJH
