Hi everyone! - A couple of questions......

Sherrie
07/16/08

Hi all,

I had my surgery(lumpectomy) on June 26th and all went well.  Final pathology showed a 1 cm tumor with DCIS and IDC, Grade 2 and no lymph node involvement(Good News!).  What did surprise me was that they also found some LCIS in the tissue that was removed as well.  I am Estrogen/Progesterone receptor positive (70% & 90%) and Her2 nue negative.  I will see the medical oncologist on July 28th and I have already seen the radiologist.

I have two questions:

1.  I understand the significance of the estrogen receptor test and I'm thinking I will probably be advised to start tamoxifen as I am premenopausal, but what is the significance of the progesterone piece?

2.  The radiololist mainly discussed the traditional radiation treatment for me.  I did ask about the mammosite technology and they do offer it.  I was told though that my breast center is more conservative and is not pushing the new technology as much due to the lack of long-term scientific data.  I am a candidate and although I'm about 5 mos short of 45, they would be willing to perform the procedure if I want it.  I know the ultimate decision is mine, but I'm interested in hearing what you think and what you would do if it were you.

As always - thanks for your support!

Sherrie

Hi Sherrie: Good news! Congratulations. FYI, LCIS isn't even really considered cancer, so that's good. It's more of a "this might turn into cancer someday" scenario.

For the answer to your first question, here's a good link to the role of estrogen and progesterone in breast cancer.

Whoops! Pressed "answer" before I'd finished...

As for MammoSite, I think it's one of those roll of the dice decisions. I know women who've done fine with it, no recurrence so far. My best friend did Mammosite and had a recurrence within a year. Personally, I don't feel it's thoroughly tested enough; if it were me, I'd go the traditional route, which seems to work just fine and has years of results behind it.

Cood luck, Sherrie - PJH
