Q: chemopause; tamoxifen

I am 44; stage 1 ER/PR+, HER2neu neg.  Had lumpectomy, ac x 4, finishing rad.  Periods stopped halfway through chemo (no period x3 months).  No hot flashes.  Recent eatradiol level 5.5.  Supposed to start tamoxifen next week.  Could my ovaries still recover?  If not, with a level of 5.5 there isn't much estrogen there- do I even need tamoxifen?

Hi - You're right in that gray zone, where you might or might not get your period back. Women who are closer to menopause usually don't; younger women usually do; you're in the middle, so there's no telling. As to whether you need tamoxifen, that would depend on how much risk you want to take. Ask your oncologist what your recurrence risk is, both with and without tamoxifen. Our expert patient, Phyllis Johnson, has written a great article on understanding risk statistics. Once you know and understand exactly what the risk is, you can make an informed decision – one that feels right to YOU – about whether to take tamoxifen. Good luck - PJH
