Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 kcsusan asks

Q: Recurrence of IDC

Had Modified Radical Mastectomy August 07,   had my regular mammo in May of 2008, indicated after an ultrasound either a lymph node or cyst on same side. Is this a possible recurrence of original cancer.  A followup will be done in November.

Hi - It's possible, but very, very unlikely. Difficult to have a recurrence in the breast after a mastectomy, since the breast is gone; the recurrence would have to be in any stray remaining breast tissue cells in the chest wall. If the medical folks were really worried, I don't believe they'd just wait till November to check it out. BUT if you're really worried, I wouldn't hesitate to ask them if you could have it checked sooner - with an MRI, perhaps. OK? Good luck - PJH
