Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, January 18, 2011 Toni asks

Q: I have stage 4 recurrent breast cancer mets to the bone. Abraxane and antioxydents??

I am having abraxane infusions. I see a naturopath as well and do vitamin C infusions a few days after chemo. I have been told that Abraxane does not work by oxydizing cells. It attacks the cells another way causing apoptosis. My naturopath says that I can take antioxydent supplements without worrying about interference with the chemo.  Do you agree with that?   I take fish oil, astragalus, CoQ 10, Vit. C, B's, calcium, mushroom mix, resveritrol, Vit D3, curcumin with bioperine, green Tea and a multivit.

Thanks.

Toni, it's important to run all these supplements by your oncologist.  One explanation given to me about why cancer patients should avoid some supplements that are great for healthy people is that anything that builds up healthy cells may also be building up cancer cells.  I don't know how if that applies to Abraxane, but do talk to your oncologist.  Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, 5th edition says that the National Center at for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at NIH has information about supplements breast cancer patients should avoid.
