Question

My 53 yr. old post menopausal sister has just discovered she has tubular cancer in her right breast

and then LCIS in her right.  She is in the process of trying to assess what to do and I am doing some research for her.  Her initial thought was she would get a lumpectomy and radiation for the tubular but then when she found out she had LCIS is looking for more information.  I had DCIS 14 yrs. ago and chose double mastectomy.

Input?  Suzie J

Hi Suzie - Your sister is actually looking at an excellent prognosis. LCIS is known as "pre-cancer," as the cells involved aren't true cancer cells (yet), but are exhibiting signs of becoming cancerous in the future. Tubular cancer is a type of infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) that has a really good recovery rate; it very, very seldom metastasizes. So, given that info., she might want to go with what she's planned - lumpectomy and radiation, with "watchful waiting" on the LCIS (or a lumpectomy on that side, too). This is simply my opinion, but you can always go back and do a mastectomy later; but once you've done the mastectomy, there's no "undoing" it. I'd vote for the less invasive procedure. Good luck to her (and you, too) - PJH
