Sunday, November 29, 2009 scb asks

Q: found a lump on my breast last night found another one.mamo and ultrasound appt with surgeon

during the ultrasound they thought they would be asperating a cyst but there was none... my doc wants my to see a surgeon but I won't see her for 10 more days. I still have not seen the results of the mamo. Should I be worried that I found 2nd lump? Will the results be the end? Will it show the reason for the the lumps?

Hi - The point of all diagnostic screening is to discover just what's causing the lump(s) you feel; so I'd imagine that, since the mammogram and ultrasound are inconclusive, the surgeon will discuss next steps with you, which might include a biopsy, or perhaps an MRI. Rest assured, they won't give up till they nail down what these lumps are - and luckily, there's a much greater chance they're fibrocystic change, or some other benign breast condition, not cancer. Statistically speaking, about 85% of biopsies show no problem; so even if you get that far, the numbers are in your favor. And don't worry about waiting 10 days; even if this is cancer, breast cancer is generally very slow growing, and this type of wait is typical. Good luck - hope things go well for you. PJH
