Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, October 21, 2011 Sarah asks

Q: I found a small hard lump, like the size of a pimple, right under my skin. It's not movable, and it's an inch above the colored part of my nipple, no discoloration on the outside. Is that normal?

I am 24 years old. I know that is in the age group that does not normally get breast cancer, but I am worried. Help?

A breast cancer lumps are usually deeper in the breast because they start in either the milk ducts or lobules, so I don't think you need to worry about breast cancer.  It is probably some sort of skin issue.  If it doesn't go away in a week or so, have a doctor check it out.  It might be some sort of infection, so if it gets red or swollen, go to a doctor right away.  It is true that most breast cancer is in older women, but it is good that you are being alert to changes in your breast and being proactive.
