Q: Has anyone experienced back muscle pain on Arimidex?

I am having a lot of back muscle pain and a general feeling of being sick on Arimidex, has anyone else experienced this. I am considering going off of it for a couple months to see what the difference might be and then starting Tamoxefin instead. I have been on Arimidex for rour months after a double mastectomy.

Shirl, aromatase inhibitors, including Arimidex, can precipitate all kinds of side effects. Joint and bone pain are quite common; not sure about muscle pain. I've been on Arimidex almost 5 years, and I have to admit I don't feel great... nearly done, though.

Have you spoken to your oncologist about these side effects? Please don't stop taking the Arimidex without talking to your doctor; you can certianly choose to discontinue taking it, but s/he should be told what you're doing, for the record. If you do go off Arimidex and feel better, then, since Tamoxifen is nearly as effective as an AI, it might be the best choice for you. Good luck - PJH

My muscles hurt so much while on Arimidex that I couln't even bend over the sink to brush my teeth!  I actually just had to bend at the knees so I asked to be put on Tamoxefin instead and didn't have the same effects.

Glad to hear it - tamoixfen was the long-term hormone therapy of choice for years, and while it's not quite as effective as an AI, it certainly helps prevent recurrence. I'm glad you've gotten some relief from your pain - PJH
