Q: Concerned about IBC Symptoms

I am concerned about IBC.  I have had a chaffing-type rash on my breast for a couple months.  It is located near the underwire of my bra on the side near the armpit.  I thought it was just dry skin due to the winter months and never thought anything of it until I read about IBC symptoms in a magazine.  The area itches, but only on the skin.  I do not feel anything on the "inside" of the breast.  The itching sensation also comes and goes.  It will be bad for a couple days, then it will almost be gone for a couple weeks before returning.  Does IBC happen this way?  It seems from what I have read, it comes on very quickly.  Does it get progressively worse quickly?  Would the symptoms appear to go away and then come back?

Lesley, I believe if this was IBC it would have gotten noticeably worse over the course of a couple of months. Also, it wouldn't come and go. If it does become worse—more widespread, itchier; or if your breast seems infected (swollen, red, hot, painful), then you'd best see a doctor about it. Good luck - PJH

Hi Lesley. It's a good idea to be aware of changes in your breasts. However, it doesn't sound to me like you have IBC. I am 8 months into treatment for this myself and had the following symptoms:

- redness and swelling of breast

- discharge from nipple

- inverted nipple

- general soreness of breast

It doesn't sound like you have any of those symptoms. My symptoms also presented like mastitis and only improved a little with antibiotics. They didn't come and go.

Do always ask your doctor if you are concerned about your breasts. Be alert for IBC as many doctors have never seen a case and it is often misdiagnosed. Remember that it is very rare - only 1 - 5% of breast cancer cases.

Having information should make you able to be alert without becoming too alarmed about the possibility of IBC. Hope this helps.
