Hi Emily - Unless you have a strong family history of breast cancer - mother or sister with breast cancer, or two or more aunts, grandmother, etc. - then your risk isn't increased. What you describe doesn't sound like breast cancer symptoms. At your age, this lump is much more likely to be a painful cyst or fibrocystic change. And shooting arm pains and numbness aren't breast cancer symptoms. I'd assume your doctor will order an ultrasound, to get a better look at what might be causing all of this. Best of luck to you - hope it resolves soon. PJH

So the doctor did detect a small lump but instead of an ultrasound he's sending me in for a mammogram....and yesx my mother had breazst tumors...my father and grandmother died of diff types of cancer but runs strong in my family....I'm just trying to stauy positive as i have a 5yr old daughter and I am very nervous and worried about whats going on, plus I didn't get any sleep last night due to the pain

Also i dn notice before, but the bottom part of my nipple is indented...never has been before. I have very large breast so I don't usually see it unfortunatly. But again I'm trying to stay positive and hope for the best!

So if your mother had breast cancer - not just tumors, which can be benign, but breast cancer - then your risk is increased. So it's good you're taking this seriously. That said, it's unusual for a cancerous tumor to cause the pain you're describing. Please read our post on breast pain; perhaps that might help allay your fears as you wait to have your mammogram, and wait for the results. I'm glad you're trying to stay positive; I know it's hard, but you'll be there for your little girl: believe it! PJH

Well I had my ultrasound and mammogram yesterday and they found NO cancer, tumors, or cysts. I DO however have fibrocystic breast disease! Just a very painful flair-up! So all clear on the western front so to speak, Thanks for listening to my concerns!
