Has anyone in VA had the DIEP procedure after a lumpectomy?

I had a lumpectomy on my left breast in 2001. I am considering reconstruction options. I want to reshape, add tissue to round out, and add a nipple to the left breast. I want to have a reduction on the right breast. I like what I have read about the DIEP procedure because I would like to keep my abdominal muscles to help support my lower back. Can anyone recommend a plastic surgeon in VA?

Lillie, you can search for board-certified plastic surgeons who specialize in reconstructive breast surgery, by geographic area, here:

Lillie,

I am someone who has just had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using a procedure called the Tug procedure (My own tissue was used from inside of my inner thighs)  I loved my physicians.......Dr. Robert Allen developed this technique using tissue versus taking muscles....(I am like you and wanted to keep my abdominal support, my back support etc)  This procedure was perfect for me.  I had tylenol for pain following surgery.  I woke up with my own breast tissue.  I did not need to look at what cancer had done to me.  The scars from the biopsy's were removed also.

I am speaking from my own experience and wanted to offer support to you.  Research it girl....go for it!!

My favorite is Dr. Maria Lotempio.....she recently went out on her own practice after working as part of Dr. Robert Allen's team.  They have office's in Charleston,SC and NYC.  I loved both offices.  The NYC had the quickest date for my surgery and I jumped at the chance to get it over with to get back to work in the fall.

Dr. Lotempio calls me every day.....she gave me her cell phone to call her any time I need to.......................You will be treated special by every member of their team!!!!!!  Look them up on the internet.  DIEP Procedure Dr. Allen....Dr. Lotempio is on the site also.......make an appointment with her as soon as possible they are booked up.

Thank you and I wish you good luck,

Louise

I had surgery on July 22, 2008 in Suffolk, VA after a bilaterial mastectomy.  Dr. Helena Guarda of Plastic Surgery Specialists of VA located on 5833 Harbour View Blvd., Suite B, Suffolk, VA  23435.  Telephone is 757-483-6550.  Surgery was at Santara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.  Dr. Guarda has done hundreds of these surgeries.  She was highly recommended to me.   Carol

Hi,

I had a DIEP on the right at the same time I had the mastectomy.  I went to Georgetown Hosp and Dr Nahabedian was my plastic surgeon.  He did a Great job, and if I were to chose again, I would still go this direction.  I hope this helps you.

God Bless

Penny, thanks so much for writing! I have surgery scheduled with Dr. Nahabedian on Dec. 1st. I have heard good things about him, but I'm nervous. I am having a mast. on the left with DIEP for reconstruction. Dr. Co. is doing my mast. Did you have her?

When was your surgery? I'll be in intensive care for 3 days then go home to Richmond. Return to Georgetown the next Tuesday for follow up appt. I'd really like to hear as much about your experience as you feel comfortable sharing.

Andrea
