Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, May 03, 2011 fm asks

Q: My mother has metastatic breast cancer with congestive heart failure and draining tube in her lungs for plueral effusions. How much time left do we have?

Recently she is recieving chemo into a ventricular tube 7 days a week, all day for 2 weeks (she wears it at home). The cancer has spread to her bone (spine and hips) as well. I have no idea if we have 6 weeks or another year with her. Any idea of a realistic time frame?

I'm so sorry you're all going through this. No one can really give you a good answer here; there are so many variables, including your mom's reaction to the medicine, her general health aside from the specific issues she's experiencing right now, etc. Her oncologist would be the best person to consult with about this; please call and ask for an appointment. S/he should be able to give you at least an educated opinion about how things will go from here on out... Take care- PJH
