Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Gina Lederer asks

Q: should you get stem cell treatment for melanoma

My brother has a small melanoma tumor in his chest they have check him out and cancer is not anywhere else. He's having it removed. Would stem cell treatment help it from not coming back. Or are there other treatments? Where could you get stem cell treatment?        thank you

Sorry, Gina, we're not doctors, and this is a breast cancer site, so I'm afraid we're not qualified to help you with melanoma questions. I suggest you ask your brother if you can go to an appointment with him, so you can ask his doctor questions about treatment. Good luck to you both - PJH

Gina, PJ's suggestion that you go to your brother's appointment if it's OK with him is a good one.  It's always helpful for a cancer patient to have another set of ears listening.  I'm no expert on melanoma, but I did some reading and question-asking of my own on this topic last year when my husband was diagnosed with melanoma.  Generally speaking, surgery is the treatment for melanoma.  Unless tests show that the cancer has spread (which it apparently has not in your brother's case), follow-up treatment after surgery is regular check-ups with the doctor.
