Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, February 06, 2011 Jill asks

Q: Freaking out that I have breast cancer - Please help!!! Have constant awareness/pain of lt breast

I had a mammo 2 years ago because of slight pain on left side of left breast. No lumps.  Mammo was normal . Pain went away. I am having another mammo end of Feb. because I am due but also because I have pain again. This time pain is worse. Feels achy, sharp stabbing in left breast, comes + goes but feel it on a daily basis. Also getting pain on left side and upper left back. My Dr. couldn't feel any lumps but I am aware that mammo can find what Dr.can't feel. Breast aren't swollen, no redness,no heat,no rash,no orange peel,no dimplimp,so far no discharge. I have a tendency to overreact thinking I have every disease know to man but this time I am truly scared because it's my breast. Can you have breast cancer with pain as only symptom.  Is it possible that I have breast cancer and the pain means that it is spreading, even though I can't feel a lump. My Dr. says that since I have had some pain that first started 2 years ago she says that sheshe would expect to feel a lump at this point. I am 44 years old with 2 daughters, youngest is only 4, and I want to see her grow up.  So scared it's all I can think about.  Please help.

Jill, take a deeeeeep breath... Pain is VERY seldom a symptom of breast cancer. It's often hormonal; or due to fibrocystic change. Since you mention it's on the left and radiating to other areas, I'd be more inclined to think you might possibly have a cardiac issue causing these symptoms. But breast cancer causing on and off pain for 2 years? Just not likely, at all. Also, symptoms lasting 2 years, without a mammogram showing anything, and without being able to feel a lump - SO not like cancer.

It's understandable you're frightened; all of us with kids who heard the "you have cancer" message have had to deal with this eviscerating fear. But considering the odds (all on your side), please try to stay calm. Fear and worry do absolutely nothing besides make you feel bad. They don't change the facts; they don't make the time pass; they just make you miserable. So try to stay busy, believe that you're going to be just fine, and put a smile on your face for those little girls, OK? Take care- PJH

Thank you for your kind response. It did make me feel better. I had a normal EKG and will be having an echocardiogram and exercise stress test on the 18th of Feb. My dad died of a heart attack + had no risk factors. I have never smoked, eat well, don't exercise that much though. In a strange way I am hoping that if this pain is something, please let it be my heart and not cancer. I just started being able to save money and if it is cancer I will not be able to work for awhile. My husband can support us, but we won't be able to save.  I know that should be the least of my worries and it is to a degree. I am so scared that this sharp/dull achey pain that seems to affect different parts of my breast is from something that grew since my last mammogram 2 years ago.  I don't want my children to grow up without their mommy!!

I hear you, Jill - but trust me, pain is seldom a breast cancer symptom. And - if it was - treatment is SO good these days, the vast majority of us survive and go on to live happy, healthy lives. FYI, I had some pretty aggressive/lengthy cancer treatment, and worked all the way through it, full time - except for taking 2 weeks off for surgery. But chemo, radiation... it was a challenge, but I didn't miss any work. So - aside from advising you to believe you don't have cancer - even if you did, don't assume you couldn't continue to work (and save money); and never believe you won't be around to dance at your daughters' weddings! Smile PJH

Thank-you again.  I forgot to mention that I am also feeling pain in my left hip (just started the other day) as well as under arm and side of breast. But no palpable lumps. I had normal blood work but it was 2 months ago in December. I just can't imagine that this feeling I have in my breast could be coming from something other than cancer. Since my last mammogram was 2 years ago, something could have been growing since then and maybe is too deep for my Dr. to feel.  Will try not to focus on it until I have to.  I am planning a mother-daughter trip to Europe in July with my then 16 year old daughter. Part of me feels like this trip isn't going to happen. I am shocked and impressed that while you underwent your treatment that you worked the whole way through. I am a dental hygienist and even though my employers would be compassionate, I don't think they would want me working if I need to take any time off on a regular basis. I also don't know how I would deal with people staring at me knowing that I was undergoing treatment.  I will say my prayers tonight.

I too have had breast/underarm discomfort for over 2 years now! Only my right breast! My hip (flexor) has recently started bothering me as well as lower back pain. I am going to be 46 in a few weeks. My underarm seems swollen sometimes but can't feel any lumps, nor in my breast! In Jan of last year, then July, mammo/us showed a complex cyst that had not changed in size. I saw a breast surgeon in December who based on the diagnostics and his exam felt that nothing else needs to be done at this time, but I will follow up with him every 3 months until my next mammo/us in July. Still have the pain every day - not excruciating - I'm just always aware of my right breast and armpit. It does increase in intensity towards my period (I am still regular) and then wanes after but never fully goes away. Nice to see that 2 year breast discomfort without feeling something would be an odd showing of breast cancer - although my fear is always there! To boot I was just diagnosed with skin cancer on my right arm yesterday and since I always, always think the worst I am thinking it's somehow all connected! WAH! Best wishes to you! Thanks for your responses ladies! Nice to know I'm not alone! (I have 4 daughters, the youngest who is 4 also! I have much left to do in life!!)

I have an update to my initial post. Great news. Went to breast clinic at hospital yesterday for a mammogram. Came back as normal breast tissue, no evidence of any malignancies. Radiologist had me come back this morning for an ultasound only because I had a concern that I was feeling something, not because she suspected anything. That also came back normal. Radiologist came in after technician did ultrasound to tell me that everything was normal on the pictures but that she always conducts her own ultrasound after the technician does it. She is also a breast specialist and felt where I was concerned too. Said that my left breast has slightly more breast tissue than the right side and what I was feeling was breast tissue. Ultrasound didn't reveal anything. Said I have 2 very tiny cysts. Then explained that breast pain is a very common symptom of many women and that some say the Primrose oil works, but must be applied for at least 6 weeks. Miraculously most of the pain has subsided. My problem is that I get very nervous and assume the worst. I am glad that I had it checked out.  As far as my hip and occasional shoulder pain, I am a dental hygienist, and I am constantly leaning over towards my patient, and the left side of my neck is alwyas sore, but I jump the gun.  So some of that pain could be coming from that, but like I said, I assume the worst. Unfortunately, that's my nature.  So don't worry like I did. You will see your daughters grow up. Smile. It's most likely either cyclical or non-cyclical pain, and it's good that you are following up with your doctor.  Take care

Jill, although it is a myth that pain is never a sign of breast cancer, it is not a typical symptom.  In addition to the cardiac issues that PJ mentioned, keep in mind that pain we feel in one part of our body sometimes starts somewhere else.  You may have a pinched nerve.  I once had a pain in my breast that worried me.  We never found a conclusive cause for it, but my doctor thought that it might be costochondritis--an inflammation of the cartilage in the ribs.  I felt the pain in my breast, but the doctor was pretty sure that it was actually in my ribs.

I hope you get a good report from your mammogram.  Since this pain is worse than it was two years ago, be assertive about getting it properly diagnosed.  However, the chances that this will be breast cancer are too small to let yourself lose sleep worrying.

Jill- I see your original post is from a year ago, but I just stumbled across it. Where are you with your pain/treatment? I too am a dental hygienist experiencing much pain on my left side. Neck, shoulder, upper back, armpit, chest/peck area. Believe it or not, the pain you are experiencing can be due to our muscles and from our postures we have to hold daily as a hygienist. My pain has been so severe that I have also thought I must be having heart problems, cancer, etc. When we deal with pain, our minds take over and we automatically assume the worst. I am struggling to find treatment to help my condition and would love to hear from you and compare stories. The hardest thing for me has been trying to find someone who understands what I'm going through and the pain I feel. But I figure I cant be the only hygienist who has ever experienced this. I have found a physical therapist who is very caring and seems to understand me, but now we have to find the right doctor/specialist who can successfully treat this condition. I hope you have figured out exactly what is wrong and how to treat it and maybe you can offer me some tips/advice or vice versa. Thanks, Carly Reply

Carly, once you rule out serious underlying health issues, the physical therapist can probably give you exercises to strengthen your muscles. You could also check out the possibilities of massage therapy or acupuncture to manage the muscle stress and tension that may be the source of your pain. I hope you soon find some relief. Reply

I am a dental hygienist. I started having pain underneath my right breast, breast, and right armpit for nine months. My ultrasound was in December. It was negative. I still have pain and wonder if I need another opinion. I'm also right handed and lean to the right and forward in my profession. I have spoke to my GP and he thinks if I still have pain that I need another Mammo and ultrasound. What should I do? Reply

Smiley, you have a good screen name for a dental hygienest! Smile Since breast pain is seldom a symptom of breast cancer, I wonder if this could indeed be related to how you work - you could be straining the muscles on your right side, and it's translating to breast pain. If your GP wants you to have a mammogram, it couldn't hurt; when you get negative results, it might help set your mind at ease. But you also might want to speak to someone about this being a potentially work-related issue. Perhaps your GP could set you up with an orthopedist or neurologist, to try to pin down exactly what's causing this pain. Good luck - I hope you get some relief soon. PJH

Smiley and Carly,

haven't been on this forum for a long time. Forgot my password.  Well the pain I was getting in my left side comes and goes.  Luckily I haven't had it for awhile.  I feel like it is in my breast but it is coming from my side or my back, and I am convinced that it is work related.  Very happy to hear that I am not the only Dental Hygienist experiencing this.  I am right-handed but lean more to my left side when I work if I am working behind the patient.  Also, this has caused problems with my left leg as well from sitting and putting more pressure on left side of body.  My doctor sent me for a cervical MRI which showed a moderate degree of narrowing and degenerative discs of C 3,4 and 5 (I think those were them) which can cause some pressure on spinal cord where spinal nerves come out. This was causing some problems with achiness in arms and constant pain in neck when working. The achiness in arms I was feeling when not at work as well.  My neck makes a crunching sound when I work.

My Dr. said that degenerative discs is common after age of 40, but my work is making it worse. Luckily I work part time but still, when I am spending even 1 or 2 hours in a row leaning down or to the side, my neck hurts.  The best thing of course is not to work but that is not an option.

Hopefully your discomfort will improve.  I find I am much better when I don't work.

Take care,

forgot to add that my doctor is sending me for an MRI on the rest of my back as she feels that I have degenerative discs there as well.

Jill, thanks for taking the time to add an update here. Being able to hear what other women in similar circumstances are going through, and what they've learned about how to address their challenge, is extremely useful. I hope you find a good solution to the work/pain equation soon! PJH

I am so happy to come across this site! I am a 39yr old dental hygienist that is having daily left rib/breastbone pain. It can be fine one day and then act up for days on end. I see a massage therapist 1x/2wks and a chiropractor 1x/wk, but feel I am just getting by and not helping the pain to go away! Any suggestions to help would be appreciated short of giving up my profession.... Reply

Jennifer, I'm so sorry - we're not doctors here, just well-read breast cancer survivors. Have you had a thorough workup from your GP - and if results were inconclusive, have you asked for a referral for a second opinion from a specialist? And if you've done that, and haven't found help, have you tried a pain clinic? I hope you keep trying to figure out what's causing this pain. It's tough and exhausting, but we all need to advocate for ourselves, continually, to get the best results possible... I wish you the very best, and hope you get some relief soon. PJH

Jennifer, has anyone mentioned the possibility that this might be costochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage in the ribs?  It can be a chronic condition like arthritis.  A doctor could help you decide if an anti-inflammatory medicine would be safe given your whole medical history.  A physical therapist might be able to give you some exercises designed with your profession in mind.  Bending over patients probably causes muscle and joint strain that could be alleviated by specific exercises.  The massage therapist and chiropractor should be helpful in this regard as well, but it sounds like you may need more help from a doctor to find a specific diagnosis.  Because of the come-and-go nature of the pain, it is not likely to be connected to breast cancer.
