Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 cm asks

Q: I have a few symptoms of breastcancer but I don't know if I should worry or not.

I am 18 years old and I'm constantly worried about breastcancer. It doesn't run in my family but it seems more and more common in people these days. My breasts itch like crazy and they're red around the nipple. They're dry and they have these bumps around the nipple. Plus, they hurt and I have to pick this white stuff out  out of the nipple ducs sometimes. I have heard how to check for breastcancer but I don't understand how to tell one lump from the other.Breasts are lumpy! Can someone please answer my questions and help me to know what to make of all this.

Hi - First of all, try to relax. The chance of you having breast cancer, at age 18, is just about non-existent. Please read our Teen Guide to Breast Development; and our post on fibrocystic change. Both of these pieces will offer you a lot of information about what's normal, and what you should keep an eye on. At your age, there are so many changes going on in your breasts, it's hard to know what exactly is going on... but rest assured, it's almost never breast cancer. Write back if you have any questions after reading those two posts, OK? Good luck - PJH
