Q: My sister went for a mamogram for a lump just below her shoulder, they found tumors in both breasts

My sister was sent to have a mamogram for a lump just below her shoulder, they found three tumors. One large and a smaller one on one breast, and one on her other breast. They did an ultrasound, and two repeat mamos. They said they were not cysts. They told her the one near her shoulder was a pulled muscle. She will have biopsies on Monday.  what do you think???

Thank You,

Hi - It would be incredibly unusual for her to have cancerous tumors in both breasts at once. So I'm guessing they might be fibroadenomas, which are non-cancerous breast tumors. She might also have a simple overgrowth of fibrous breast tissue - fibrocystic change. Or, she might indeed have breast cancer (but in one breast, not both). It's tough waiting, I know, but hang in there; 85% of biopsies show no cancer. Good luck - PJH

Dear PJH,

Thank you for your reply, I am hopefull. I have also gained some more information since my last post. Aprox. 4 months ago she was bleeding from the nipple on that side and mentioned it to our sister in law, who advised her to get medical attention, which she never did. <-- grrr! deep breath hhhhhhhhhhh ok ... my sisters dr. called her on Friday and said he is VERY concerned and that she needs to prepare herself for what may come. So tomorow is the day of her biopsy, what can I expect? how long does it take for them to know? If this comes out bad how can I help her best?

Thanks
