Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 04, 2008 Julie asks

Q: I have found three small lumps in my breasts. My doctor kept telling me it was fibrocystic.

I recently had a baseline mammogram at age 38. The results are BI-Rads II = benign findings. My concern is that is also stated there is moderate dense fibroglandular parenchymal pattern and a right axillary lymph node. After researching these two things i have learned I should be having further tests, although; my report says no follow-up required. Should I pursue further or trust in their decision?

Julie, I'd ask to speak to the doctor again. Armed with the info. you've researched online, ask him what you've just asked us: should you have further testing? If not, why not? It doesn't hurt to advocate for yourself. And if the doctor's answer doesn't satisfy you, ask to be referred for a second opinion, OK? What you want is to totally  understand what your situation is, what it might develop into, and what possible future symptoms you should be looking for. So until you feel confident that you have all that information - keep pursuing it. Good luck - PJH

Hi Julie,no need to panic but do go ahead with the investigation.I was diagnosed with cancer of the breast(IDC)last year at age 62.I had a mastectomy, chemo & radiotherapy.I feel greatly angered by the casual attitude of the doc I went to who said it was simply fibrocystic. He didn't encourage me to have any further tests immediately. It's only when I started to feel the lump & had a mammography, ultrasound & lumpectomy that it was confirmed I had cancer. You may have no cause for alarm, but do push the docs for further investigation.
