Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, November 18, 2011 CJ asks

Q: I have HER2+ invasive breast cancer.. I had surgery, a lumpectomy with clear margins on the l.b., benign biopsy on the r.b., and 17 lymph nodes removed, 13 of which were positive.

All blood tests and tumor markers have been normal. All angiolymphatic vessels were negative. Has anyone tried Tykerb without traditional chemo? Chemo is too toxic. No one knows for sure if there's any cancer left in me. Liver lesions biopsied were negative.

CJ, ask your oncologist what your ABSOLUTE (not relative) risk of recurrence is if you skip chemo and go straight to Tykerb or Herceptin, vs. doing the complete treatment, including chemo. S/he should be able to tell you. Then it's up to you to decide if the added benefit of chemo in lowering risk of recurrence is worth the downside: toxicity to other parts of your body, and possible permanent side effects. Not an easy decision, that's for sure... but only you can make it. Good luck - PJH
