Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, July 27, 2009 Diana R asks

Q: I had a bilateral mastectomy 2 weeks ago, and am wondering if there is a chance I won't need chemo?

I have a new granddaughter due in 2 weeks and am recovering from the surgery and am hoping that by some chance I won't need chemo.  I don't want to be sick when my first grandchild is born... Diana R

Many women don't need chemo, Diana - you may be one of them. Your oncologist will tell you whether your pathology report indicates that chemo would help you prevent a recurrence. If the cancer has spread to your lymph nodes, you're more likely to need it. if it hasn't, you're less likely. Sounds like you haven't had the chemo discussion with your doctor yet... why not call and ask when you'll be going over the results of your pathology report? That's the only way to find out for sure. Good luck with that new granddaughter!!! PJH
