Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, October 05, 2011 Holly asks

Q: I had a breast cyst 2 yrs ago and it was aspirated in the dr. office. the results were benign. i now have exact cyst back, confirmed by u/s and it's my choice to aspirate again? Your advise please?

This cyst was characterized as a "rad four, suspicious" 2 years ago and then determined benign after an office needle aspiration. Since it's back and the same, they are leaving it up to me to pursue or wait for changes. My concern is should I push for a more thorough check or is this normal and I'm concerned for no reason? Any input is appreciated. thanks!

Holly, I had the same thing happen over the years.  As I understand it, aspirating the cyst does two things, it reassures everyone that the cyst is harmless, and it relieves pain.  If this cyst hurts, then aspirating it will probably rid you of pain for another two years or so.  Since the ultrasound confirms that this is indeed a cyst, not a solid lump, it is not dangerous to just leave it.  The main thing that people with frequent cysts have to do is never assume that a new lump is a cyst.  Always have it confirmed with an ultrasound the way you did.

Thank you Phyllis for your response and time. I appreciate the information! I have a best friend with inflammatory breast ca as well (I read your profile), and she is one of the strongest people I know! She will be 10 years from diagnosis this June. We are both in our early 40's with young children. (and Nurses)!

I wish you all the best for continued wellness and appreciate your help to others! Thanks againSmile

Holly, thank you for your kind words.  I'm delighted to hear that your friend is almost ten years out from her IBC diagnosis.  That is wonderful!  My best wishes to you both as you deal with breast issues.  I'm sure you are a wonderful support for each other.
