Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, September 26, 2010 Pamela asks

Q: I had an ultrasound guided biopsy on Friday, Is it supposed to itch??

I had an ultrasound guided biopsy on Friday, I wasn't given a choice as to have or not have the clips inserted to mark the areas that were biopsied. This all happened so fast, I had the mammo and ultra sound done back in June, the nurse at the doctors office told me everything was normal so I didn't think twice about it. On this past Tuesday, my doctor called me himself and asked if I had the biopsy done and I told him no and explained what the nurse told me, next thing I know I am at the hospital 3 days later having it done. (I won't find out until about Thursday what the results are) They question I have is, is the area supposed to itch? The two areas itch so bad it's driving me crazy. The nipple area is very tender and senstive and it also itches. I am going to call the hospital in the morning about it. The hospital I went to was very good. I had four people in the room with me (all employees, no family members went with me, I was alone in that aspect) and they were all so wonderfully nice and supportive. I didn't know I had a choice in not having the clips inserted.

I would have never questioned having clips put in - wouldn't have occurred to me. They said they needed to put them in to mark the area being biopsied, and that was that. Some people do have an allergic reaction to the clips; and you might simply be having a nerve reaction to the needle; your breasts are quite sensitive, particularly the nipple. Or a reaction to the antiseptic... could be lots of things. See what they say tomorrow; maybe by then it will have stopped, too. Best of luck - hope you feel better soon, and truly hope you get good news on the biopsy results... PJH

Pamela, itching is not unusual when incisions are healing.  Do tell the doctor about it just in case your itching is beyond the normal range.  I hope you get good news from the biopsy.

Just wanted to let you know that the results came back negitive. The itching has stopped for the most part. I think it is just the tape they put over the entry points. My PCP still wants me to go see a breast doctor for a follow up anyway.

I'm delighted to hear about your good report.  It sounds like you have a proactive doctor who will follow through if there are any additional problems.
