Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: why would arimidex be prescribed for a man?

my husband is currently incarcerated and has had bad headaches. He went for lots of test and an MRI and was told that he has a mass on his brain stem that is not operable. He is being given a shot a week for the next 14 weeks and is now taking arimidex once a day. How is this supposed to help him?

I'm sorry for your troubles. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question, as I have no idea why Arimidex would be prescribed for a mass on the brain. Are you sure it's Arimidex? This sound slike something you should ask the doctor, OK? Good luck - PJH

Unfortunately being an inmate in a prison, the families are not given any medical information, it's not allowed by the prison system. He did ask the doctor what he was being given and didn't get an answer.  He asked the nurse and this is what he was told. Is this the kind of medication that reduces cancer cells?

No, it stops breast cancer from growing, but only indirectly: what it actually does is stop your body from producing estrogen, which feeds breast cancer cells. That's why I'm wondering why he got it. Men produce VERY little estrogen (it's a female hormone), and I don't see what it would have to do with a mass on the brain. So, like you, I'm totally puzzled... Again, I'm sorry we can't help you here. Have you tried asking at breastcancer.org? they have a forum for quesitons and answers, too. Maybe someone there will have some insight on this. PJH
