Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Should a woman reveal mother's breast cancer to a mamography tecnician?

An aquaintance of mine recently had a mamogram & ultrasound for a lump,  It was a benign cyst & she has several others.   She was told she is fine , to watch & come back if anything changes. She did not reveal that her mother died of breast cancer & she has an aunt with brest cancer.  Would the tecnician have responded differently if this information was revealed?

Hi - Hopefully, your acquaintance has told her GP of her family history of breast cancer, and that information is in her medical record. The mammography technician isn't the one who reads the results; that's left to a radiology specialist, and hopefully he or she would know to be extra-careful when reading your friend's mammogram. That said, it doesn't hurt to tell everyone possible — nurses, doctors, techs — about a family history of any particular disease; we're all in charge of our own good health, and we need to advocate for ourselves constantly, not rely 100% on the busy doctors and nurses who treat us. So next time she feels something suspicious, she should really emphasize her family history; it'll just put everyone more on the alert for any problems. Good luck to her, and thank you for being a good friend. PJH
