Hi again... I have four spots on one breast. 1st diagnosised from mammo:DCIS,.. the second detected
on ultrasound: 8mm invasive Ca.. the 3rd detected on MRI: invasive Ca 5mm , or less. the 4th spot was not picked up until after mastectomy.. in path report..the largest of three 2.4 c.m of DCIS, with 1c.m. invasive Ca.. ( four different surgeons looked at all of my films).. other breast clean.. sential node clear, PET scan clear.. oncologist wants me to have chemo.. CAF, CMF, or TC.. of course he wants me to have CAF.. but that seems to have the worst side effects..cardiac etc.. I am 46 years old..in good health , just a nervous reck... how do I choose which chemo????
Lia, if you don't trust your doctor's advice, it's best to get a second opinion from another doctor. Have someone else read your file, and give an opinion; if you're at a good hospital, they won't frown at hooking you up with another oncologist. The heart damage you mention with CAF is a rare side effect, but well-known among treating physicians. Trust me, they keep a VERY close eye on you. And the drug that's the possible cause - adriamycin - is a very, VERY common chemo drug, and the vast majority of us have gotten it without cardiac issues.
I know it's difficult to choose, when presented with choices that may impact your very life. We all go through this; so funny, how they expect YOU to make the decision about how to save your life, when they're the ones with all the knowledge! When I had these choices (and they're quite common), I always went with the most aggressive treatment, and/or the one recommended by the doctor. I got through it, it's in the past, and I'm doing fine. I wish the same for you, Lia. Good luck- PJH
