Q: Non-painful lump under arm

I have a non-painful lump in my upper armpit area. It has been there for several months, gave no problems and my reg MD said it could be just an abnormal shape to my body. (?) Well, a month or so has gone by and I am having back pain and numbness on my right upper back area, along with numbing/cold middle finger on right hand. Seen my ob/gyn doctor he examined it and when he started moving it one way it made my arm completely numb and the other way it sent a numbing sensation through the right side of my mid back area. I am scheduled to see a general surgeon in a few weeks and a neurosurgeon is booked til mid Oct. My question is this something that anyone else has heard of or had?? And am I seeing the correct doctor to give me the answers I need regarding this lump?

Yes, a general surgeon is a good next step for diagnosing this lump, especially if it turns out that it is the lump pressing on a nerve that is causing the pain and numbness.  At that point the neurosurgeon will probably be involved.  Is there any way to be seen sooner?  I am especially sensitive to the potential dangers of armpit lumps right now because two of my friends are undergoing treatment for cancers that started with armpit lumps.  One has lymphoma, and the other has breast cancer.  Of course, most armpit lumps turn out to be enlarged lymph nodes or benign lumps of various sorts.  So please don't panic, but do move right along with having this diagnosed as soon as possible.  I hope you get good news and can laugh at me for being alarmist.
