Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, November 24, 2011 Ann asks

Q: I have soreness in one nipple, the breast is not tender at all, I have been experiencing it for a few days and am wondering if I should be concerned since it is just one?

There is no redness or swelling, just pain. Pretty constant just more severe sometimes than others

This is almost certainly not a breast cancer symptom, Ann, as there are SO many reasons you might have a sore nipple; our post on nipple issues will detail some of the more common ones. If the soreness doesn't disappear on its own within several weeks; or certainly if it gets obviously worse, and you see physical changes in your breast/nipple (redness, swelling, spontaneous discharge, etc.), then it would be best to see a doctor and find out what's going on. Hopefully this is hormonal, though, and will go away within a few days. Take care- PJH

Ann, anytime you have a problem in just one breast, you should be concerned enough to check with a doctor if it doesn't go away in a reasonable time.  As PJ points out, there are so many possible causes for a sore nipple that you don't need to worry.  Just take action if you don't see an improvement.
