Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 Margaret DeTemple asks

Q: I had a dbl masectomy 15 yrs ago; age 49. Now in menopause suffer from severe hot flashes; no help

I had a complete hysterectomy four years ago and suffered menopause systems that were quite severe.  Thos included flu like symptons and terrible hot flashes, heart palputations.  There is no hormonal meds that have worked for the hot flashes which are more unlike flashes in that I'm overheated most of the day.  I've visited several doctors and no one seems to be able to help.

Hi Margaret -

I'm 34 and had a total hysterectomy 3 years ago, and since my breast cancer was hormone receptor positive HRT was not an option for me.  My doctor rx'd a blood pressure patch called Catapress TTS that worked quite well.  I've also had a doctor recommend Vitamin E - but I can't say that one worked for me.  I live in New Orleans and the heat and humidity get me daily!

Also I make it a habit to carry a bandana with me, so that if I experience a flash I can use it to wipe sweat away or wet it with water and place it around my neck (which helps stop flashes right away.)  For night sweats I now sleep in a tank top instead of t-shirt with whatever shorts or pants.

Good luck getting those flashes under control!

had complete hyst 4 years ago. was taking hrt. was diagnosed with aytipical ductal hyperplasia 6 months ago. was told to stop hrt immediately. it is the estrogen fueled type. had horrid menopausal symptoms. NONSTOP. was considering hrt again when a friend told me to go get acupucture. been doing that for 3 months now. at first i was going 2x a week. now once every 2 weeks. i'm on a herb too. no side effects. i feel like my old self again. now i only have a flash a couple times a day and sometimes at night i have more but... i go right back to sleep (which wasn't happening before). now i went for my 6 month mammogram and something was fishy. was sent for an mri. doc says it looks like dcis. having biopsy tomorrow. at leasst i'm not having flashes too and the acupuncture can help with your stress too. good luck
