Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Heck asks

Q: I have a lump under L breast that aches alot and feels like it is attached to my rib

Directly under my left breast is a tender lump that feels like its attached to my rib. My L breast is considerably larger than my R breast and for the past year I have had a shiny, red area under L breast that comes and goes. When stimulated my L nipple discharges thick, white stuff. I had a DX years ago of polycystic breast disease and when I voice concern about my changing breast to my Gyno. at exams he dismisses me by telling me I "just have lumpy breasts". I am concerned more now after taking Femara for fertility reasons my breast seems to be changing. What is wrong with my breast? Lumpy or Legitimate?

Hi - Please get a second opinion. Any time your breast is noticeably changing, you need a better diagnosis than "must be lumpy breasts." Tell your doctor you're stressed and uncomfortable, and would like to see a breast specialist; breast specialists are usually found at cancer centers, so you might have to access a different facility than your current one. A breast specialist could look at your whole history, see what tests have been done, what conclusions drawn, and then order any additional tests that might be necessary, at this point, to come to a firm conclusion about what's causing all of these symptoms. Best of luck - hope you make some progress on this soon! PJH
