Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Kinga asks

Q: About 5 days ago, one of my breasts started hurting..

It hurts whenever I touch it, or move, but it's not an entire breast that hurts, only a part of it. It is not swollen nor red, but I can feel it's harder than the other breast, basically I can just feel with my fingers that there is something hard there, but not really a small lump, it's quite big, and feels quite 'veiny' when I touch it. What could it mean? Please help im really worried :(

If it is right before your period, this hardness may just be from swelling related to hormones. However, since this is just one breast, you should check with the doctor if the hardness continues. You might have a blocked milk duct causing the swelling, so a hot compress is a reasonable home treatment until you can see the doctor. There are quite a few possible causes besides a blocked duct. You might have a harmless cyst or a benign fibroademona (breast lump). It could be the start of an infection. Of course, cancer is a possibility, but not the most likely one. The doctor can sort it all out with you. Reply

Kinga, Phyllis is right on. If this continues, you should see a doctor, as it may be an infection. In the meantime, please read our posts on breast lumps and breast pain for lots of good information about what might be causing this. Hope you feel better soon - PJH
