Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, June 26, 2010 jnl asks

Q: Would an ultrasound and an mri of the breast show any abnormalty in the lymph nodes in the armpit?

I had amammogram which showed dense tissue in my left breast. I was having my 40 year old routine mammogram. I have been noticing increased swelling in my left breast for about 3 months now. I started feeling a difference in my left armpit while shaving about a year ago. It's not a lump but like a raised area. It didn't bother me until a month ago I feel like a pinching sensation from my armpit to my nipple. My doctor said it's probably nothing. I did have another mamogram and right after the radiologist ordered an ultrasound of my left breast. They said there was an area of concern on my outer breast and ordered a mri. The mri was ok and they said to have another mammogram in 6 months just to follow up. I was wondering if I needed an ultrasound of my armpit to diagnose lymph node issues or would it have shown up on the mri or ultrasound of my breast.

                                                   thank you

I'm not sure how extensive the MRI was - if they went up into your armpit, or not. The good news is, a negative MRI is usually VERY accurate, i.e., it's extremely unlikely any cancer is "hiding." But did it catch your underarm tissue? Don't know. I'd suggest you ask them specifically about the thickening in your armpit and, if they didn't cover it in the MRI, ask to have it examined and diagnosed, OK? Good luck - PJH
