Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, November 22, 2009 Lynne asks

Q: I have cancer in my left breast and am thinking of a mastectomy. My right breast is big and I want

I want to have a transfer of breast tissue from the right breast to the left.  Is this possible?  I only read about getting tissue and fat from other parts of the body.

Lynne, I've never heard of this being done. But it certainly sounds reasonable, doesn't it? Please ask your plastic surgeon if this is an option. Seems to me that if it was, that kind of surgery would be performed frequently, and it would be mainstream, and we'd all know about it; but it doesn't hurt to ask, right? Good luck - PJH

It is not unusual for large-breasted women to get a breast reduction when reconstruction is done because there is a limit on how large the reconstructed breast can be.  I haven't heard of using fat from the breast for reconstruction, but it sounds like an interesting idea to explore.  Ask around for the best plastic surgeon in your area and see what's possible.
