Monday, July 07, 2008 Rachel asks

Q: is this anything i should be worried about?

I am 16 and my right nipple is inverted whereas my left isn't, also i know that it is normal for my age for one breast to be bigger then the other but my right breast is smaller then my left and im worried that it being smaller and having an inverted nipple may mean bad things for the future. should i be worried?

Rachel - Should you be worried isn't the question - because obviously you are! At your age, the possibility of cancer is remote. But kudos to you for paying attention to your breasts, and noticing differences/changes. My advice: make an appointment with your doctor, so he/she can do an exam and explain to you what's going on. I'd think it has something to do with puberty and growing breasts... but meeting with a doctor should go a long way towards setting your mind at ease. Take care, Rachel - PJH

Rachel I definitely commend you for being so proactive at your age!  I think many young women take breast cancer for granted, thinking it's an "old lady" disease when in fact that is NOT true.  I was just 31 my first time, and cancer does not run in my family.

I think what you are experience is just normal breast changes for a growing teen.  Your breast will go through many changes prior to becoming an adult.  Inverted nipples are quite common, and one of the many reason women can't breast feed.  I had them as well as my mom, and as you said you know one breast can be slightly larger than the other.

But like PJ suggest, seeing your doctor may be the best thing to ease your mind and rule out risks.

Best of luck to you!
