Sara, a normal mammogram, while not 100% conclusive, is the usual standard by which doctors judge whether a breast lump is serious. Apparently they think there's nothing to worry about. However, you know your own body better than anyone; if you're still concerned, ask for followup diagnostic screening. An ultrasound would reveal whether this lump is a cyst; women your age are prone to fibrocystic change, which is a major cause of lumpy breasts. If an ultrasound is inconclusive, an MRI would reveal more about this lump; if that doesn't do the trick, a biopsy is a last resort, and the only test that can truly rule out cancer.

My advice? Ask your doctor what s/he thinks this lump is; and if you're not comfortable with the answer, pursue further testing. A normal mammogram doesn't have to be the end of the story. And in the meantime, take heart - the vast majority of breast lumps are, indeed, nothing to worry about. Good luck - PJH

Sara, you shouldn't worry about this because the vast majority of breast lumps are not cancer.  Your age and the fact that you were breast feeding when you discovered it increase the chances that it is benign.  However, I think you need either more tests or more information from your doctor before you forget about this lump and move on.   Until a doctor explains exactly what kind of lump this is and why he or she is sure it isn't cancer, I think you need to push for more tests and/or a biopsy.  If your doctor can tell you definitively that it is a cyst or fibroadenoma, then you can relax and play with your baby worry free.
