Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, May 02, 2009 Lyn asks

Q: I just had a mammogram because I had some pain in my left breast. The technician took the first set

and called me back in, saying they had found something. But when I went in, she said they found it in my right breast. (I did act surprised saying the right one felt fine, it was the left one) The second shot showed absolutely nothing and I was sent home all clear. The left breast is still slightly but continually painful. Is it at all possible that the technician got the L and R mixed up? If not, should I do anything at all? thanks

Why don't you call the doctor and ask about this?  It would be unusual for the films to be mislabeled, but once the radiology department gave me another Phyllis Johnson's old mammogram to take to be compared to the newest film.  The look on the radiologist's face was priceless when he put two very different breasts up on his screen.  I'm sure I looked shocked too.  You'll feel better after you ask, and it will give you a chance to mention that you are continuing to have pain on the left side.
