My sister who has breast cancer. She had surgery last October and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment and has completed the 4XAC. Now she will have 4xTaxol or 4xTaxotere soon. How to determine whether Taxol or Taxotere is more suitable for her?
My sister who has breast cancer. She had surgery last October and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment and has completed the 4XAC. Now she will have 4xTaxol or 4xTaxotere soon. How to determine whether Taxol or Taxotere is more suitable for her?
Hi Lilian: First, please read our AC + T FAQS, if you haven't already. It's true,Taxotere, which is another form of Taxol, comes with the potential for more side effects than Taxol. With Taxotere, you're more likely to feel some pretty significant weakness. And you're also more susceptible to infection, due to low white blood cell count.
It's an interesting choice. Please read this study from the National Cancer Institute, detailing a head-to-head trial with women with metastatic (advanced) breast cancer. What it boils down to is, taxol given weekly and taxotere given every three weeks are equally effective; so if your sister's schedule doesn't allow weekly treatment, she might be better off with taxotere. Another consideration: in the study mentioned above, women who received taxol actually lived longer than those who received taxotere; though taxotere and taxol both were equally effective for stopping cancer's progression. If your sister does NOT have metastatic cancer, these results won't be significant for her.
With so many things to consider, including her diagnosis and the pathology of her cancer, I think this is a question best discussed with her oncologist. Good luck - PJH
