Q: Final surgical pathology report question

Two weeks ago I had a lumpectomy and the tumor was .5cm.   Margins were clear and no lymph node involvement.  Afterward I completed 5 day Mammosite Balloon Radiation. My final surgical pathology report reads:  the proposed pathologic stage is pT1b pN0 pMX.My surgeon will recommend an Oncologist for me this week, and I am hoping there won't be any chemo needed.  The tumor was 90% ER+  and 80% Progesterone+.  May I get your opinion and comments?  Thanks so much!!

Hi Hayley - I'd guess from this information you have a stage I cancer, one that shouldn't require any chemo. Your doctor may advise you to have the Oncotype-DX test, just to see how effective chemo would be for you, if you DID have it. But probably you'll simply have to take long-term hormone therapy - tamoxifen if you're pre-menopausal, an aromatase inhibitor if you're post-menopausal. So you're through the worst of it, hopefully - onward and upward! Good luck - PJH
