Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, July 16, 2009 Breatheunreal asks

Q: Hello, i am 18 years old and get sharp shooting stabbing pains in my right breast

i had an operation to remove an infected lump in my right breast which was 3 years ago.
i now for about a year sometimes get a shooting stabing, stinging pain in that same breast which occurs inside and
goes from my nipple to the edge of the breast at my arm pit. it is then really sore to touch and the pain starts spreading round my breast

slightly and lasts about half an hour. after this the pain sometimes moves to my nipple which really stings
and the other day there was clear fluid coming out of a small hole on the surrounding nipple area.
Any help or advise would be very much appriciated, thank you.

I have reseached and think it could be to do with my caffine intake as i drink alot of coke, but am still unsure.

I think it is more likely that the pains are related to your operation than caffeine intake since they are just on the side of the previous surgery.  Since these are "come and go" pains, they are probably not dangerous.  You could test out the caffeine theory by gradually reducing it from your diet.  If you currently drink a lot of caffeine, sudden withdrawal might give you headaches.  If they are getting worse, or if they are interfering with your life, then check with the doctor soon.  If not, you might want to take some notes for a month or two to see if there is a pattern to when they happen.  Unless they go away completely, you should let your doctor know about them.  You might want to start with the surgeon who did the surgery.
