Tuesday, December 29, 2009 Gini asks

Q: I have had a skin sparing mastectomy.

The doctor instist it is a simple mastectomy.  I have had 4 reconstrution surgeries.  The breast looks like a ping pong paddle.  It is a saline implant.  How do I request to have the sufficient amount of skin and the shape changed to match the other one.? The same doctor/surgeon reduced the other breast at the time of the mastectomy.  ????????

I am leary of more surgery at this time.

Hi - Not sure what our question is here. if it's "how do I ask the doctor for a better cosmetic outcome," don't be afraid; simply state your case in clear terms (exactly what you don't like, and what you'd like changed/fixed); and ask him/her what can be done.

A "simple mastectomy" is the medical term for a mastectomy where just the breast tissue, but not skin/chest wall are removed; it's not referring to the simplicity of the surgery itself, nor the reconstgruction afterwards.

Does this help? If not, write back, I'll try again! PJH
