Q: boy 14 with lump in breast. no pain, odd shape, clear nipple discharge

My son is 14 and has a lump under his nipple that he said he found 2 months ago.  It has gotten bigger and has clear discharge on occation. It is odd in shape (rough edges- not round) No pain.  I'm worried about cancer and so is he.  He is young, but seems to develope problems of older people.  He has had shingles twice.  What else could it be?

Hi - Your son is the exact right age for gynecomastia, and the symptom you describe sounds like gynecomastia. This is something boys ages 13=15 or so often experience - it has to do with puberty and hormones. Google it for a complete explanation, OK? See if it sounds like what he's experiencing.

I'd say you should get it checked out just to ensure that's what it is; but please don't panic about it being cancer. Men can get cancer, but only about 1900 a year are diagnosed, in an American population of over 150 million. And almost always in older men. So check it out, but don't fret over cancer; it's just not realistic. Good luck - PJH
