Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Lumps/mottled beside insertion area 2 days after core biopsy--what does this mean?

Had a core biopsy 2 days ago, us guided, for non palpable lump that seemed to be enlarging.  Very fortunate that I have the results today and they found only benign breast tissue.  But today I have a few lumps under my skin to the side of the insertion point, the skin is mottled, I feel some burning and don't feel great (no pain during or right after biopsy.)  I don't feel as if I have a fever, and the area is not hot or red.  What might the lumps be, and is it normal after biopsy?  What criteria should I use for if it might be appropriate to consult my doctor?  Holiday coming up, don't want to bother him unnecessarily, he's been so kind already.

Mary, could be some bleeding under the skin. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to call the doctor—trust me, every oncologist/radiologist I've dealt with has been more than happy, holiday or no, to try to help. Why not catch him today, to set your mind at ease? After all, it's a long holiday weekend for you, too - you don't want to spend the whole time worrying! Glad the biopsy was benign. Smile - PJH

Hi Mary-

I think if your doctor is as kind as you say, he wouldn't feel that you were bothering him. In my experience, it is always better to see the doctor when things seem minor than to wait and let them escalate (I have had to learn this, more than once, the hard way).

And yes - definitely great news about the biopsy results!

Take good care-

Laurie

Mary I'm so glad to hear your tumor is benign - yay for you!  I'm not certain what those other lumps are - I know I had extremely lumpy breast tissue that meant absolutely nothing, they weren't cysts and they weren't tumors,  It was one of the deciding factors in having my other breast removed, cause I knew I'd go nuts worrying about cancer.  So it is natural to have some lumpy tissue.  Perhaps you never noticed it before or maybe this procedure caused some type of internal irritation.

It's likely nothing, but in order to fully enjoy this long holiday weekend and ease your mind, I suggest getting ahold of your dr and asking.  It might be something simple that even his nurse may answer - maybe it's a somewhat common side effect, who knows!  Only they could tell you if it is something serious or something that should be looked at further.  I'd also mention all your symptoms, though you felt fine before, it's important for him to know if you are not feeling well.

Best of luck to you.
